Jan. 21 meeting; reminder for our Mommy and Me Sleepover next Saturday

Hi Families,

This week we will continue to work on our Exploring and Experimenting keeper with some fun craft centers. Note: If you have an extra paper towel roll that is heading to the recycling bin, please bring it to Sparks on Tuesday instead.

As you may recall, next Saturday is the Mommy and Me sleepover! A tentative list of items to bring, as well as the event plan, is below. There may be updates later this week, so please check back before you pack.

Also, please note that there will be no meeting on January 28.

See you soon!

January 14th meeting and a couple of Just FYIs...

Hi Families!

This week the Sparks are learning a bit about space as part of our Exploring and Experimenting keeper.  A special thanks goes out to Rachel’s mom Laurie for helping us while Jenn R (Jewel) is on holidays. Thank you as well for the other offers to help – we’ll keep you in mind for next time!

A newsletter will be sent shortly providing more info on the January 25 Mommy and Me Sleepover. Please note that we are asking participants to avoid bringing air mattresses if at all possible (e.g. the mattresses that require an air pump). They take up a lot more space than foam roll-up mattresses or yoga mats (there are over 40 girls and their moms coming to sleep in the gym, so space starts to be a constraint), and they are more cumbersome to set up. Also, the girls are not allowed to bring air mattresses to Girl Guide camps for these and other reasons, so we figured it would be best to have the same rules for the mommy and me camp.  That being said, if you have health issues that require an air mattress, definitely let us know.

Badges – the Sparks have been working very hard on their keepers! To date we have finished Being a Spark and The World Around Me. Soon we will also finish Exploring and Experimenting and In My Community, as well as various other Challenge badges. We will hand badges out again in early February, as we are still waiting for a few to come in.

That’s all for now. See you soon!

Happy New Year! Lots of news here for January 2014...

Hi Families,

Happy New Year! We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season. A couple of items have come up over the last few weeks that we wanted to update you about. Please also see below for an overview of what’s in store for your Spark during the next few meetings.
Disney on Ice Tickets: Last year the Girl Guides were offered a special promotion for the Disney on Ice show at the Canadian Tire Centre. Although details are not yet available, indications from the Guiding office suggest we will also be offered a deal this year. Last year the offer included discounted tickets (around $20 each), a special badge for participating Girl Guides, and a workshop at the end of the evening where the Girl Guides in attendance got to chat with some of the performers and costume designers. Parents and siblings were able to attend the event as well.

We had a very small window of opportunity to buy the tickets last year (i.e. under a week to collect all the money; the tickets were first come, first serve), and this is likely to be the case this year as well. If you do think you will be interested in the tickets, likely for the evening show on Friday, February 21, please indicate the number of tickets you would be looking for on the sign-up sheet at the January 7 meeting.
Volunteer needed for our January 14 meeting: Jewel (Jenn R) will be away on vacation the week of January 13. We are looking for a parent volunteer come in to help us out if possible. If you are interested, please let Marigold (Jen Collins) know.

Rally Day, Canada’s Wonderland, May 31, 2014: This year, there will be a province-wide Girl Guide Rally at Canada’s Wonderland. The day-long event is for Girl Guides of all ages. If you are interested in taking your Spark (they must be accompanied by a Leader or a female adult with a police record check), please see Marigold for more information.
Other Notes:
  • Please ensure your Spark has indoor shoes for every meeting. If possible, please also try to have her go to the washroom before the meeting.
  • We’ll be placing an order with the Girl Guide Store after the January 21 meeting. If you have anything you’d like to order, please see Marigold.
January Meetings:
January 7 (Exploring and Experimenting Keeper): This week we’ll be learning all about water and how important it is.
January 14 (Exploring and Experimenting Keeper): This week we’ll be learning about outer space!
January 21 (Exploring and Experimenting Keeper): Tonight we’ll be making playdough animals, goofy inventions and musical instruments!
January 25: Mommy and Me Sleepover!!
January 28: Meeting cancelled
See you soon!
